DEMOGRAPHICS IS THE KEY

Israel’s advocacy efforts face significant challenges in today’s increasingly polarized world. The critical issue isn’t just that we’re missing our target, but that we haven’t fully identified who our target should be. The need to focus our messaging has become even more urgent after October 7th, as the precision of our outreach is critical in ensuring our message resonates with the right audiences. Prioritization is key in our public diplomacy efforts as resources are limited. The younger generation in the USA plays a pivotal role in shaping public opinion and influencing American decision-makers, which is vital to Israel’s security and political standing. In addition, this generation will also form the future leadership of the USA. The United States remains Israel’s most critical and indispensable ally, and safeguarding this alliance is essential for Israel’s future.

Recent studies show a troubling erosion of Israel’s image among young Americans, particularly within progressive circles. These individuals—often college students and young professionals—are increasingly influenced by intersectional narratives and social justice movements. Their views are shaped by the networks and discourses that dominate these spaces, making it vital to frame our messages to address their concerns.

Survey results reflect a growing shift in attitudes within this group. Younger Americans, particularly in coastal regions and urban areas, tend to view international issues through the lens of power dynamics and human rights. This demographic is critical, as their perspectives increasingly shape public discourse and influence policy decisions in the USA Ignoring this audience, or failing to engage with them effectively, could have serious long-term consequences for Israel’s image and relationship with the U.S.

Engaging this demographic effectively requires careful attention to the statistics and trends driving their perceptions. For example, a recent Pew Research Center survey (March 2024) found that only 27% of young Americans view Israel favorably, compared to 59% of older generations. Additionally, regions such as the Northeast and West Coast show even lower levels of support. These statistics emphasize the need to shape our advocacy in ways that resonate with this audience and address their concerns.

To reach this demographic, we must frame Israel’s story not as a defensive narrative, but as one that aligns with the broader values of the modern Western world—values such as justice, equality, and human rights, which are central to this audience’s worldview. For instance, we should emphasize that radical Islam seeks to undermine and destroy the very essence of the free Western world that young Americans hold dear. Israel must be portrayed for what it is, a defender of these shared values.

In conclusion, effective Israeli advocacy today requires more than just delivering a message—it requires tailoring that message to the target audience. If we succeed in doing so, we can ensure that the future leaders of the USA remain committed to Israel and its security concerns.
